Motivation for a geodata infrastructur

Information and communication technology change our life like no other technology during these constituting knowledge community. The recovery of information out of multiple data resources and the generation of knowledge became central elements of the community.

Fot this reason the access to digital data and information will become a determining location factor and the basic condition for the development of the key technologies of our time. Geo information will become more important in modernization of the administration and in eGovernment. They are often the base for multifaceted decisions inside the administration departments, management, politics or in daily routine. The transparency of decisions from the administration departments will be enhanced and public participation will be easier.

An added and also external motivation is given through the INSPIRE-directive which asks for an building and development of an europe wide geo data infrastructure. At this juncture the efficiency  and adding value of existing databases through harmonization and integration should be enhanced.

Dutys, aims and components

The duty and aim of an geo data infrastructure is to find, visualize or download geo data easily and fast through the web - i.g. over the internet. The use of a geo data infrastructure saves ways and time.

A geo data infrastructure is especially composed of the supply and use of geo basic data, geo thematic data and geo metadata which will be allocated by the thematic competent authority digital as standardized geo web services over the web. IT network is an information highway or rather build the physical infrastructure. The application of standards and norms make an interoperable use of geo data or rather a loss-less transfer of geo data between different systems possible. For the search, visualization and download of geo data GeoWebServices are used and needed.
